Malmesbury for Portas 'pilot' status
Following the Mary Portas’s report on Britain’s High Streets, the Department for Communities and Local Government are looking for 12 ‘pilot’ towns to test the ideas contained within the report. We believe that Malmesbury should apply for ‘pilot’ status. This is not purely because of the threats of the supermarkets, although the findings should assist the town centre in combating any impact should they gain approval, but because the town centre needs a vision and plan for the future – to make it sustainable, vibrant and successful.

Late Night Shopping was the busiest in years!
This ever popular event, organised by the Chamber, attracted hundreds of shoppers, families and revellers to the Town Centre on Friday evening. There were over 30 stalls, almost all the High Street shops were open, many providing refreshments for their customers, new and old, as well as prize draws, gifts and offers.
The evening was opened by the Town Crier, and entertainment came from the Salvation Army, Malmesbury Melody Makers and the Athelstan Players, plus a visit from Father Christmas on behalf of the Rotary Club. Of particular note was the effort made by Leonard Walker Butchers, who sold burgers and hot dogs all night, with all the proceeds going to Wiltshire Air Ambulance and raising over £500 on the night!
Supermarkets answer to local businesses
Monday 21st November's evening meeting was well attended by both members and invited local retailers. Both Sainsbury's and Waitrose presented their proposals and answered questions from those in attendance.
Please note that these meeting notes do not represent the view of the Chamber - they were taken by Chamber committee member, Ruth Jeffrey on an independent basis as a record of the meeting.
